    C2 A/C Expansion Valve

Several threads ago I mentioned that I had an A/C expansion valve from a 63 that was jammed shut. I can't find the thread now but one of you offered to experiment and see if you could repair it. I just came across the valve as I was moving parts around.

Anyway, if you happen to see this please contact me and we'll see if these things are fixable. The place in Florida and Texas don't fix them any longer.

    Re: C2 A/C Expansion Valve

Typically when TXV's end up closed it is because the sensing element (bulb and diaphragm) is discharged. Commercial type TXV's have removable sensing elements that can be replaced, the TXV's in our cars are a part of the valve body. Repairing them would be quite challenging and wouldn't know where to begin.

Other than that debris would be the only thing that would cause a blockage. While I've worked with this type of valve I've never disassembled one, in my business replacing them is more cost effective. They can be taken apart though. Usually the valve seat can be removed by using an allen wrench to remove the seat and spring assembly going through the low side port of the valve. IF you choose to take it apart pay very close attention to the number of turns it takes to remove the seat since this is how super-heat is adjusted. Simply removed and replaced may screw up the super-heat setting and cause the valve to operate incorrectly. If you're lucky you'll find junk in the seat, if not you've confirmed that the sensing element is discharged.

    Have fun!!
