    Rag joint orientation

Doing some repairs on my 64, looked at rag joint listing from LICS and the part they have is the rubber piece riveted to the flange. It is listed as 'lower' assembly. I've found pictures etc. showing the rubber flange mounted in both upper and lower positions. Is there a 'correct' way to orientate the rag joint assembly to the steering box? Also, I remember someone saying it was mounted on the steering box and was painted with it from the vendor. Thanks for advice in advance.

    Re: Rag joint orientation

    Dan,

The cloth rag and rivited metal half goes on the steering column shaft. The other metal half goes on the steering box, the slit on that metal half lines with a punch mark on the steering box input shaft which lines everything up correctly.

I was just going through the 63 AIM. It appears the entire rag joint (steering coupler) was attached to the steering box. The steering shaft is inserted into the rag joint when the body is married to the chassis. This is why the bolt (head mark)in the rag joint at the steering box end can be different that the upper bolt as they were installed at two different times at two different places.
