    67 Horn

    Hi Guys,

Has been awhile since I have been on here.
My 67 horn only blows when I turn the wheel to the 10 o'clock position or say the 3 o'clock position from dead center. So I pulled the wheel and got down to the the cooper stud where it rides on the horn ring and all looked ok but the cooper stud did look worn in that the end was not flush. Slightly angled on the top from wear. There was a build up of cooper shavings in the hub as well. The horn ring looked ok? Should I replace the horn ring? Can I take a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the cooper stud up so it makes better contact with the horn ring?

    Thanks

    Lawrence

    Lawrence,

You can just replace the contact with a new one, clean up the mess and you should be OK. The contact with internal spring is carbon and will the copper ring will wear it down.

Most of the big box companies have them in their catalog or on line.

        Lawrence,

The carbon contact with the internal spring is what I was talking about replacing. I think the brass ring is part of the switch assembly and quite expensive.

If you get a new contact and spring from Paragon, the spring is fantastic. The post will need to be shortened to the leangth of the original. Reuse your original post.
The original spring has a wire diameter of a human hair, gets weak and floppy with age, no jokes intended. The replacement is is from a wire about 1/32" diameter and will outlast us.
I went through this about 3 winters ago. Probably should have taken pictures, but I still have all the old parts.

I replaced the wrong part. I misunderstood what you guys were saying. My gut was telling me the contact and spring but just went the wrong direction.

Ok back to this horn. The pin that is inserted in the stationary piece in the hub that the turn signal stalk screws to....it is to ride on the brass ring on the bottom of the cancelling cam right? Mine does not touch the bottom brass piece of cancelling cam. Looks like it is worn down and can't make contact. But when I turn the wheel to the, now 11 o'clock position the horn blow and back to the 5 o'clock position the horn blow. Not in the 12 o'clock position. I have a new cancelling cam with a new pin and spring.

Lawrence, the part of your question that I focused on was the build up of shavings in the hub.I rebuilt mine a few years ago and in the process after doing so I heard a scrapping sound .dis assembled the unit and found said shavings,I traced my problem to an improper screw (TO high ) that was used to hold down the turn signal arm.Replacing this hold down screw with a flat head type solved my problem, hope this helps your cause.

Thanks Francis, the shavings that I reference are coming from the post that (I assume) supposed to make contact with the bottom of the cancelling cam. What is odd is that my horn blows at 11 o' clock and at 5 o'clock. Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Have not heard from anyone regarding this issue. Only responses about a bad contact post but that appears not to be the issue since I bought a new cancelling cam with a new contact post.
