Gene, I understand locking the two nuts together makes sense. BUT, in the 66 AIM Page f153 upc 5 c1 it calls out (adjustment procedure) to tighten nut 3a to obtain cable tension, then hold and torque nut 3b. One on each side of the equalizer. The drawing could be wrong or it was never done like the drawing. Old original cars speak better as you have seen.

The “U” in the photo is not assembled correctly. The nuts are assembled correctly. I do not believe the manual on nuts positioned on each side of the U is correct. I’ve not seen that on original unmolested cars. Even my September 66 build car had both nuts locking the position of the U on one side. Think about it a nut in the forward position would serve no purpose. The reason for two nuts is to lock one against the other to maintain position of the U brace.

Never say never as far as what persons have on the show field. It is possible to have parts leave the factory differing from the norm. But we are looking at TYPICAL production GM practice. Understand the manual photos are for reference and may have parts assembled under one’s interpretation of what was done. Correct or not it is only a reference so don’t expect everything to be perfect.

It depends on the year. For 1965-66, there was supposed to be one nut on each side of the equalizer. For 1967-71, there was supposed to be 2 nuts installed on the rear side of the equalizer and no nuts installed on the front. For 1972-82 it was back to one nut on each side of the equalizer. Was the nut configuration of every car of 1965-82 assembled the way it was supposed to be? I don't know. I have not seen every car in original, as-built configuration.

I appreciate your response. Gene states that the "U in the photo is not assembled correctly". The nuts are not in question. I'm trying to figure out what is incorrect with the "U" assembly. In the pic I posted in post #9, the paragraph above the picture of the assembly states that the single nut on either side was used until March of 1967, they then went to the two nuts on the one side. Curious minds just want to know what's incorrect about the positioning/assembly of the "U"

My experience taking apart old original stuff indicates the photo shown has the sheet metal equalizer up side down.

The open side of the equalizer is oriented UP. Period.
