    1993 tire choice

Is there a newer Goodyear tire that is approved for NCRS judging for a 1993 corvette (base model)? The originals were Goodyear Eagle GSC and had been changed to Continental. I Do have the correct spare. I will be driving to my local Arizona NCRS event with the car. Thank you for the help, John

There is no replacement for the original Goodyear GSC tires. However, any Goodyear tire of the appropriate sizes (255-45-17 front, 285-40-17 rear) will garner partial judging credit. Unfortunately, I don't think that Goodyear currently makes a tire in either of those sizes. Continental makes a tire in the 255-45-17 size but I can't find that any manufacturer makes one in the 285-40-17 size. I hope there is one, though.

According to Tire rack.com, Pirelli and Contintental offer 285/40x17.

John, I have stashed away, 4 GSC Goodyears. I also have a full set of Grand Sport rims that I mounted my road tires on. When judging time came I would replaced my road tire and rims for my 90.s original rims and original GSC 285 40 17,s. My car will no longer be Flt. judged so I mean to part with the four tires and my set of Grand Sport rims. The tires are over 26 years old, so are not an item one would want to drive on for more that a few miles. They only have 200-300 miles on them and appear brand new. When my car was flight judged I would have a friend transport the original tires and rims, whereupon I would swap both at the meet then back for my drive home. I will be at the Arizona Regional if you are interested look me up. I judge 53-55, 56-57 and 90-96. I look forward to meeting you.

Unfortunately, 1993-96 Corvette owners face an extremely limited choice of tires. I now find that Continental offers the only "matched set" front and rear tires for 1993-96 standard suspension Corvettes. I missed that earlier. While Pirelli does offer rear tires in the correct size, they would have to be used with Continental front tires. I'd NEVER want to do this. However, I strongly suspect that the Pirelli rear tires in the correct size are "not long for this world". They might already have been discontinued and retailers are simply selling out existing manufacturer or dealer inventory. Note for anyone buying the Pirelli tires: check the sidewall for dates; much of the currently recommended 7 year life might already be used up when you get them.

For 1990-95 ZR1 and 1996 Grand Sport there currently exists only one tire that can be had in a "matched set". This is the Goodyear F1-GS-D3. This tire has a very odd-appearing tread design that, personally, I'd be loathe to use. The tread design is just about as far from the original GS-C design as a tire could be and still be a tire.

For 1993-96 with Z07 or Z51 things are better. There are quite a few tires available in the 275-40-17 tire size. I think many Mustangs used this size and that may be why they are more available.

Think about this for 1993-96 standard suspension cars: what happens when even Continental no longer offers the correct size tires? ...and then there were none?

Just my two cents. Goodyear Eagles F1s has those sizes for your car. I have a set as my driving wheels for my 1995. In fact, I have had the car judged with them on and I think it was a 30% deduction, if my memory serves me right.

Which Goodyear F1 are you talking about? There are/were several F1 tire models. There is no F1 tire currently available for 1993-96 standard suspension Corvettes. The only one currently available for 1990-95 ZR1 is the F1 GS-D3.

Those are the F1 GS-D3. They are not available in sizes for 93-96 standard suspension Corvettes. They are available in sizes for 1990-95 ZR1, 1993-96 with Z07 or Z51.

As a matter of fact, Goodyear currently offers no tires for 1984-88 Corvettes. They do have tires available for 1989-92 Corvettes with 17" wheels.

Ed I am very interested in 2 of your GSC goodyears. I will look for you at the Arizona Regional. I will be having my 1971 Ontario Orange coupe judged for its first time, and it is my first time in the judging field. Look forward to meeting you, John

Keep in mind that the only 1993 Corvettes that used the 275-40-17 tire size were those equipped with Z07 suspension. Those were only 3.8% of Corvettes built that year.
