    Trip Odometer Again

I installed a new cable (lubed prior to installation) for my trip odometer. I routed it to avoid binding as much as possible. It will reset, but not very smoothly, and makes unpleasing sounds in the process. It works, but feels and sounds marginal to me. How smooth and quiet do they get? Perhaps I'm expecting too much.

    Thanks,

    Rick

    Re: Trip Odometer Again

Can anyone give some insight into how smoothly their trip odometer resets? Maybe they didn't work that great when new, what with the cable routed like a pretzel. I may be thinking about trying to fix something that isn't broken to start with.

    Thanks,

    Rick

You should buy a new set, noise isn't normal & they wear out.

        Re: Trip Odometer Again

My 67 has the original trip reset cable as installed when built. I have a habit of resetting the trip to zero every Jan 1st, to easily monitor how many miles I drive each year. The cable is very hard to turn and seems to bind often while resetting. Usually it gets really tight when the numbers are reading 999.9, then "jumps" past zero, to about 111.1. I can then reverse the twisting, and move the numbers back to 000.0. Seems like it has been like this since I bought this car in 1978. Reset cable could probably use a good cleaning and lubing, but hesitate to disturb anything behind dash, as nothing has ever been taken out.

Jeff, thanks for sharing your experience - it is EXACTLY the same as what I'm seeing. The trip odometer ( and the mileage odometer as well) work perfectly when driving, with no noise. When resetting, mine acts exactly as you described, even with a brand new/lubed cable. Removing the cable from it's hole in the dash and holding it as straight as possible smooths out the resetting quite a bit. I don't think this is something worth spending any time or money on. I suspect that 9 out of 10 of them were this way within 6 months of delivery due to the cable routing being so sorry. I have very little confidence that it would reset much smoother when the work was done. Thanks again for taking time to post.

Remember, these cars had a warranty & customers wanted perfection. You are completely wrong about failure rates.

Rick, I checked my trip reset functioning again last night. When resetting the numbers back to zero, the cable is hard to twist, and gets really tight when it gets to 999.9, and then jumps past zero to 111.1. Reversing the twist usually moves the numbers back to 000.0. However, if I continue to turn the cable in this direction, it will easily turn and "add" miles; it turns quite smoothly and with little effort to turn the cable. I don't think the problem is in the reset cable, but possibly in the odometer. Nonetheless, the total and trip odometer readings appear to function normally.

Jeff, I reset my trip odometer on both the 63 and 71 upon every tank fill and I find them quite how you describe. The curve in the reset cable seems to be a bind for easier and smoother operation. I am stubborn though and I will continue to use them both. I have driven the 63 over a 100k miles and the 71 now about 50k and climbing.
                It's a good life!
