    67 Big block oil pan

I have been working on two 67 Big blocks and both have the hole and bolt in the front of the pan into the timing chain cover. Ser #'s 24XX and 14xxx. The 7th edition manual say's no hole or bolt? Do the members agree?

    James,
My 67 16XXX has no hole. I can't say for certain it is the original pan but I think so. Read the May 67 Chevrolet service news on page 272 of the 7th edition. It seems pretty clear that at least early cars (up to Dec 21 1966) have the hole.
    Kind regards

that hole and the timing cover with the nut was used on all 65-66 BB cars. so I would think if there was any left over in 67 it would have been used up in the beginning of the 67 model year

Yes, the hole and the nut in the timing chain cover were used in early 1967. Do not know for sure when this stopped. Was it at the same time that dowel pins were put in the block to line up with the holes in the later timing chain cover?

No, it was not. I used to think it was but I found out later I was wrong. The GM casting #3904351 block used for most 1967 Corvette big blocks did not have the dowel pins regardless of whether the engine had the lower bolt on the timing cover. The follow-on, 1968 block GM #3916321 did not have the dowel pins, either. The first Corvette big block with dowel pins for timing cover alignment was the GM #3935439. Of course, all subsequent big blocks had them, too.

It still surprises me that the change to the dowel pins was not coincident with the elimination of the lower bolt. This implies that the purpose of the lower bolt was not related to timing cover alignment.

Also, I do not know that the elimination of the bolt was also coincident with the elimination of the associated hole in oil pan. The hole could have continued after the bolt was eliminated.
