    67 engine judging question

Calling all 67 engine/mechanical judges to give me your opinion, please. I have my 300 hp base motor rebuilt, painted and ready to reinstall into the chassis of my 67 red coupe. I have included a pic of the original, untouched valve cover sticker that was on it before restoration. This car has never been apart until now and I am "freshening up" the chassis and engine. Exterior and interior is original. This sticker was in this position from day one and the metal underneath was as smooth as a baby's butt. This contradicts the 67 JG which states the sticker's position as being on the RH/pass side valve cover front. If I replace it in the "found" position, how much argument will I receive from judges when I present the car for Top Flight certification? I have pics to back up the original paint and markings on the engine. So, do I comply with the masses to placate a future judge "going by the manual" or do I restore the car the way I found it???
    Thanks.

I would forward your post to Nick Culkowski, the 1967 National Judging Team Leader.

I'm not sure how to forward this to Nick.

Nick, can you respond with your opinion?
      Thanks.

If you believe this is original, do not change history. The few point deduction is worth preserving how this car was created. I have restored according to what I am telling you and for the most part judges are cool with it. Of course, there are always the narrow minded ones but who cares, its your car. Do what you think is right.

Words are put there by people. Not always depicting every senerial. Your car as you say tells a different story. The car is not capable of lies. I think with photos you have a convincing case. Besides it is not the type of thing that gains anybody anything.

                Re: 67 engine judging question

John - I looked at a number of the 1967 Corvette TIM& JGs I have in my collection & I know that the one valve cover has the "sticker" because our "pretty much" original base motor '67 has one on the "RH/pass side valve cover front"; but I did not find a reference to that information in any of the 1967 Corvette TIM&JGs in Section 4 Mechanical 4.Valve Covers, Valve Covers, Small Block, Base Engine-300 hp. So, where is this info documented?
BTW, I agree with Jaime. If you have good reason to believe the location of the valve cover sticker on your car is "original" present your case. There are many deviations that have been observed over the years during the restoration & judging processes.
Who says working on old cars isn't interesting & FUN. Pete

Your HO engine is a 300 hp powerglide? Just out of curiosity, did it have a yellow background, black lettered HO sticker at the rear of the right side valve cover?

I agree. Having restored several very original cars, I put them back the way they left the factory even though it disagrees with the JG. Maybe that's why they call it a "Guide" instead of a "Bible". I've yet to see one that is mistake free.

                      Steve,
The yellow HO paper sticker on the rear of the vc is long gone. I don't think the adhesive was good enough for it to endure 50 years and 101,000 miles. The remaining sticker has held on. And yes, it's a 300 PG car with some pretty rare options (headrests, shoulder harness, tele, PS, PB, real BO whl car, speed minder speedo, AC, PG, full tint, radio, red leather, wsw tires).

If it is an A/C car, would the sticker be visible on the right hand side valvecover with the A/C compresser installed? Maybe that is why they put it on the left side, so it was visible with A/C? If I understand correctly, the process was that the sticker was installed at the time of build of the engine, accessories were added on the line (such as A/C). Maybe it was an engine assembly running change that isn't documented?

                            Good question Thomas.

HO is 300hp with PG, apparently with and without AC. So would the engine plant know if this engine was destined for an AC car, in order to place the sticker on the left VC?

                              Mark:
As you alluded to, I do not think the engine plant would know. But they might of received some feedback that the placement was illegible on some cars, so I was wondering if there was any record of a running change to move the placement. Or maybe different operators at the engine plant put them in different spots, as long as they are on the engine.
