    Rear Brake Bleeding Sequence???

I am finishing bleeding the brakes on my '65 with power brakes. Page 5-3 of the 1963 shop manual states that the left rear gets bled then the right rear. I was taught the the right rear is bled first and then the left rear since it is the farthest from the master cylinder. Is the service manual wrong or have I been wrong all these years?

    Thanks,

Your '63 manual is dealing with drum brakes and you should be dealing with discs unless you have one of the 316 cars that used the deletion credit. Ultimately it shouldn't make any difference as you are trying to eliminate any air from both sides and air will not move past the distribution block back into the side you have already bled. (The brake system has no idea nor does it care how long the brake lines are that go to each side, so it won't know which side you start with) You will probably find more information, however, that suggests bleeding the left rear first followed by the right rear. The calipers themselves should be bled by opening the inside bleeder screw until no air comes out, followed by the outside bleeder screw. At least this is the way I just bled my brakes after a complete overhaul including new brake lines. Brakes are working great. If you are installing new pads/rotors or have had the rotors resurfaced, you will need to break in or "bed in" your new pads. I'm sure others will have comments.

Start at the point as far away from the MC as possible and work your way to the nearest i.e rr, lr, rf, lf than mc and repeat a couple of times

Right Rear, Left Rear, Right Front, Left Front!

        The service manual is wrong.

No matter if drum or disc. Fluid flows the same for both!

I've done a lot of brake bleeding over the years. I always start with the corner that is the SHORTEST distance from the master. This is the quickest way to fill up the pipe between the master and the junction blocks.

On a single piston m/c I go lf rf lr rr and the same sequence will work on dual piston masters. Once I get a fairly solid fluid stream on each corner, I go to the next. Then I repeat the sequence about three times with 6-12 cycles at each corner until I am confident that all air has been purged.

For a conventional flush I use about a quart of brake fluid. Initially filling a dry system will require more.

On a disk brake car tapping the caliper with a small hammer will help dislodge any air bubbles clinging to the interior surfaces.

Any sequence will eventually work, but I think mine is the fastest way to fill the system.

I caught that same anomaly in the 63 shop manual but chose to ignore it...I do it as Joe states above and I have done for over 40 years...
