    64 Alternator "clocking"

I just had my 64 Flight judged at a chapter meet, and the judges said my alternator may be "clocked" wrong. See picture below. Comments please, do you just take out the bolts and turn CW/CCW?

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

The orientation looks correct to me. However, the hot lead (red) with the boot needs to be clocked whereas the lead comes out of the boot at 6 o'clock. See attached.

Caution! If you attempt to re-clock the alternator, once you remove the screws holding the rear section to the front, the rear is free to move back and pop OFF the drive shaft... You need to take care to apply forward pressure on the rear case to keep it forward enough that this doesn't happen.

If it does come fully apart, now you're into using your copy of the maintenance manual to see how to spread the fingers of the contact brushes. Specifically you'll want to use those tiny access holes in the rear case to insert brush holding tools (something like a straightened paper clip usually works) so you can re-install the rear case onto the main shaft.

I once saw a fellow member who attempted to re-clock his alternator at a Regional Meet without knowing what he was doing. He an unhappy camper when the rear case 'popped' back and off the main shaft!!!

And, push the white nylon "keeper" that's part of the harness back into it's hole in the alternator case.

Thank you Jack. I am just going to re-orient the red wire.

Be sure to disconnect the battery when doing this. You don't want to ground the wrench when loosening/tightening the red wire with the battery connected.
