    1967 Tachometer Cable replacement

After 51 years the original cable is kaput.
Wait, only 51 years!!!! What kind of junk were they making???

Seriously though, I need a new cable for my 1967 327-350hp. I see that Paragon has it listed (their p/n 1867) as being 23" long, is this correct? They only list the one p/n far all years, all engines.

If by "all years" you mean all C2 years, then the answer is yes. All C2 tach INNER flexible shafts were 23" overall length.

      Joe,

My "all years" was meant to be all C2s.
      Thanks for the fast answer.

Re: 1967 Tachometer Cable replacement - follow up

I had to order the new cable, ordered it from a vendor on a New York island (you figure it out). The cable arrived last Friday and finally had a chance to do the install today.

I used five 1/4-20 x 6" long bolts to support the gauge cluster. Getting it out was fairly easy after pulling the cluster forward on the bolts. I was able to insert the new cable through the firewall and connected it to the tachometer. After re-installing all that was removed to get my non-flexible old body under the dash to do the removal all that was left was to connect it to the distributor.

The square end of the cable would not go into the distributor. I had it lined up and used a surgical clamp to spin the cable into the Distributor, but NO GO. So thinking the new cable was too large of a square cross section, I measured the old cable's square, it's about 0.103" to 0.105". Then I measured the new one, it's about 0.104" to 0.105". This is when I noticed that one of the wires that made up cable square had a loose partial coil strand. Took out the Dremel and ground off the loose wire end, and put a chamfer to all four edges of the square tip to facilitate an easier insertion. It went right end then. Wasted an extra 1.5 hours on a poorly made product.

Getting the rubber speedo & tach cable seal into place was another challenge with the garage stereo turn up a bit to drown out the language of frustrations.

Re: 1967 Tachometer Cable replacement - follow up

Some days we just need to be thrilled we can get part for our old toys. I too get aggravated at the lack of quality control.
Six Sigma, what is that? A college frat house?

Thanks for the reminder to get the garage stereo upgraded. I will likely need it for the same reason.
