    '64 frame rail stamp question

I began the process of carefully cleaning an over-the-top application of undercoat on my '64 frame. In cleaning the side rails I was careful to look for the frame stamp and shim markings. Unfortunately,, there is no signs of the frame stamp, but I did find shim markings and another set of white ink, stenciled numbers. The pics show what I found, but I don't know if this is the date that they pulled the frame for shipping or something else. Assuming that it is 6-1 representing June 1, that would make sense since my assembly date was June 11th. The dash next to the 6 would seem to indicate that there were more numbers, but no signs of anything other than a nondescript white grease pencil marking. I understand that they put both on the frames as they were selected for shipping. Can someone else give me more insight on the numbers? They were located on the passenger side frame rail just forward of the door jamb.

I have still not seen good documentation about when they went from a stenciled frame pull date to the hand written ones.

Michael, if it helps any, my assembly date was June 11th. Did they go from stencil to hand written or the other way around. If stencil to hand written my VIN is 195XX.

Thanks, they went from stencil to handwritten. My '64 VIN:192XX has a stencil one too, so it must have been very late.

Hi Garry. Great photos. If your stencil is that visible, I'll bet your VIN stampings on your frame are still there. Keep looking.

Re: '64 frame rail stamp question

I found my frame stamp on the driver side , I was able to get my fingers between the body and frame. Used steel wool to clean the frame.
I also cleaned up my half shafts and found some strange markings. the smooth areas must have been grease crayon. What they mean is any ones guess.

I am not so concerned about the frame stamp because my car is very original. Same owner last 45 years and one prior to that. Finding lots of interesting markings. Thanks.

Re: '64 frame rail stamp question

It has been brought to my attention that my title of "64 frame rail stamp" on this thread is a misrepresentation of what I meant for it to read. My intent was to discuss and show pics of my frame stencil and not frame stamp. Thanks to everyone who responded to either topic. All good!
