1977 AM/FM Stereo Radio quit - what's the troubleshoot procedure?

With an electronic "clack"-sound the original AM/FM Stereo in my 1977 quit working - actually it's the left speaker that went out and the right one appears to produce less volume than before. If I fade to fully right and turn up the vol, I get back sound on the right....

I may be wrong (bad perception?) but it seems I also cannot tune in a Stereo signal.

What's the setup of the radio/speakers? Is there an amplifier to also check out in addition to wiring and the radio itself?

Thanks for giving me some guidance.

The amplifier is in the radio. You might try a good speaker on the left side.

Thank you, gents. I will try out the "switch left right speaker"-thing first to make sure the prob is not the left speaker (are the terminals/plugs identical? Then that check should be a breeze switching l and r quickly...), and then check out sending away the radio (being located in Germany does not make that easier...) So this may have to wait for winter..........
