    Muncie code stamping

I'm told that when Muncie transmissions were manufactured, they were then date stamped (production date), and placed in inventory, available for shipment. When installed in a Corvette, they were also stamped with the partial VIN of the Corvette. I understand the date code and VIN code were gang stamped. Could either of these codes been hand stamped? Possibly as installed in a 1967.

    Jeff,

It has been my belief that the engine and trans were stamped by the same person on the assembly line using the same gang stamp. I believe they were stamped after installed on the chassis, well before body drop.

Jeff the date stamp was done at munice factory, and as Don says the VIN was stamped at the same time as the engine.

        Don & Ed
Thanks for your response. Great info. That makes good sense that the engine VIN and transmission VIN numbers would be stamped at the same time when the car was built.
However, my concern is the transmission currently installed in this 67. The date code appears to be individually hand stamped. I thought Muncie gang stamped their date codes. This date code (P7C27) precedes the car build date by about 3 weeks, which is about right, but doesn't look "factory" stamped. Everything else looks OK. Any opinions?

Jeff, the aluminum surface that the P date is stamped into is hard to fake and be completely undetectable. Your date looks typical for that time frame, I would guess the car was assembled sometime in early April 1967.

Ronald, thanks for your input. I agree that the VIN stamp looks absolutely proper, but the date stamp looks to be hand stamped as compared to others I've seen that appear to be gang-stamped.
