    1967 Seat Backs

I have been looking for a set of white original seat backs for my 1967 for some time. There are original seat backs for sale in black, blue and red, but none in white. Is it possible to successfully change color of original seat backs and pass judging?

Yes of course it is. Dye both inside and outside. Clean with a plastic cleaner before dying.

Gene Mano can support this should I be missing details but during the Advanced Judging School at the National last week, I understood that all seat backs were molded in the color they should be. Technically, this means a dyed seat back from color 1 to color 2 would not be correct. FYI. Dan

It is possible to dye the seat back but I have found that any item that receives a lot of use like a seat back will not hold up well. I think the constant use of the seat will cause the dye to wear off showing the darker color coming through. I tried dying a saddle door panel dark blue and it looked very presentable when finished but as soon as I started using the car the dye started to wear off. I ended up finding an original set of dark blue door panels.

Yes that is correct-therefore the need to do the dying correctly.

I know how difficult it is to obtain a pair of white 67 seat back that are in restorable condition. My triple white 67 has original white seat backs and door panels. Some careful restoration was necessary for all 4 pieces. In fact only replaced was carpet (not so original looking), and seat covers. The reproduction pieces for seat backs and door panels are poor at best.

Keep looking at swap meets and white ones will show up. Three years ago I found a single white seat back as a spare. I wasn’t even looking for it. You may need to source single pieces to obtain a pair. The good thing there are NO rights and lefts.

Gene Manno - your advise to keep looking proved to be correct. In Corvettes @ Carlisle, I found a set NOS white seat backs in exceptional condition. Not cheap, but beautiful!

I’ve had good results with cascade dish washer detergent. Use a strong slurry. A lot of careful hand work with soft brush.

I found a set of 1966 seat backs for my car and had to modify them a bit for the seat latch on the '67. I did luck into a NOS set of white '67's later on and used them. They were almost too nice to put on my survivor car.
