Had an issue last week when starting my 68 L71 where fuel was shooting out of the top vent of the front carb. Removed the needle and seat hoping to find debris but none found.
Pulled the carb and removed float bowl. Found that the plating has hanging off of the metering plate and began to crumble off as soon as I touched it. I believe the float was hanging up on the plating which caused the issue.
Decided to investigate further by removing the metering plate and gaskets. Found the same thing was happening on the main body of the carburetor where the plate attaches.
I did not take a picture of the main carb body as I found it. That attached pic is after I cleaned the carburetor body.
I could just purchase a new metering plate but my question is what to do about the missing plating on the main carb body.
Pretty confident that it would be a mistake to reassemble with new gaskets without addressing the issue as I'm sure the metal needs to be protected.
Is having the carburetor re plated my only option?
i would first try if it would works by getting a aluminum file and file down the main body so it not warp and check for cracks and passages block then get the main body re plated and clean and then install a new or a good used metering jet and plate with new gaskets and set up your floats and see what happens, very simple setup 2300 Holley, some one went crazy and seem to over tighten this meter plate screw ???
Actually those metering plate screws were not tight. The plating lifting off in the picture gives the appearance that the screws are too tight.
Thanks
Dan
Non ethanol with a splash of AV100 low lead to bump up octane a bit. The inside of the fuel bowl looks good. No loss of plating. Just the metering plate and the main body of the carb where the metering plate bolt up has plating loss
Daniel, I just cleaned / dremmel wire-wheeled all the loose stuff as best I could, then sprayed everything with carb cleaner and blew everything out with compressed air. Knock on wood, it's been 2 years now and the car is running great.
