NCRS Concours class cars judged during Corvettes at Carlisle

[Originally sent in email to the Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Posted here by request. Edited for clarity.]

At Carlisle Saturday I witnessed my first NCRS Concours Class cars being judged. I took the photos attached to share with you.

Judging this new class of Corvettes is the biggest addition to NCRS in my years with the organization. The NCRS Concours Class expands NCRS reach significantly within the Corvette community encouraging artistic freedom during restoration. And this without taking anything away from the accurately restored Corvettes we all love and NCRS is justifiably famous for.

Doing this judging during Corvettes at Carlisle was brilliant, it gave NCRS and the new NCRS Concours Class great exposure outside of our existing membership. At Carlisle all NCRS Concours judges wore red shirts with "NCRS" in large letters across the back to make them easier to identify in the crowd. Bystanders in the large gathering were invited to step up and ask questions during this highly visible chapter judging. Reaction from the Carlisle crowd was enthusiastic, and bystanders were quite surprised and excited.

And the new NCRS Concours ribbons look fantastic!

Congratulations to Bob & Carrie Frampton (red '61 restomod) and Richard Small (insanely loud black '62 454 750hp) on their outstanding cars. When not being judged by NCRS, both cars were being honored in the "Chip's Choice Display" during Corvettes at Carlisle.

Look for more information about NCRS Concours qualifications and judging in future NCRS publications, schools & Technical Seminars.

    Cheers,

I took some photos like this in the limited time I was able to attend. I think this is a good move on the part of NCRS. Those two cars were very unique and well done.

Jim thanks for taking the pictures and posting. I was one of the judges and the interest generated by this judging was great
Dave Brigham is doing a great job with this new judging class and the full roll out of the program should be available in the near future.
The judging sheets for C1 to C4 have been completed and are under review.

OK I'll step into the deep end with my comment

This new judging has no place at NCRS (key word RESTORERS)

Absolutely amazing cars for NCCC not NCRS

Go ahead and start the hate mail but that is my opinion

It would become NCRS/CRMS That is National Corvette Restores Society/Custom Resto Mod Society
The real questions that NCRS membership should be asking are these.
          1. What is the total cost for this endeavor?
          2. When this program was conceived what was the cost analyses of the full implementation cost verses the amount of new funds generated by new members joining just for Concours judging?
If the total cost was $20K to fully implement the program you would need to have 445 new members just to break even.

You forgot one very important question. How many years can we continue without trying new ideas and concepts. We will continue to die on the vine if we do not try something new. Kudos to Dave Brigham and others for trying this. We had much opposition when those darn midyear people invaded our club years ago. It seems to have worked out.

You have also missed an important item reducing your balance sheet with sufficient return on investment. How long can you last without that?

First I question how implementing would cost $20k? Wouldn't the fee for having a car judged more than offset the ribbon & judging sheet costs? It not like judges are paid. Beside attracting new NCRS members, surely there are current members that will now decide to have their modified Corvette judged. I just do not see any negatives. Tell me what I'm missing.

To answer you first question. Check on how much it would cost to develop a electronic IT program then all the other development costs associated with this project you maybe surprised. For that contact your Regional representative as those cost should be in the operating budget. Fee's that are associated for a judging event go to offset the events costs. So existing members do not help defray the startup cost only the cost of the event.

No offense meant but you didn't answer my first question, you just told me to look elsewhere for an answer😉 Second, if existing members have a modified car judged, that is additional revenue, isn't it? Aren't regional judging event s revenue generating and profitable? If not, why does NCRS exist?
Help me understand why you have such a negative attitude to changes that can better a club or business.

I agree with you completely, Jimmy. Restomod and cruisers represent an entirely different perspective and mindset from those who wish to restore and keep classic Corvettes as original as possible.

I had a car in Stock Concours Class in San Antonio last summer. First time car had been in an NCRS event since 1992. Would not have bothered with show if not for this new division!! Kudos to Dave and his team for there efforts. I for one will NOT participate in flight judging due the political nature.

                          Simple Question.
                          What is the judging criteria?
I have a car for this class but I will not have it judged until I know what the judges are judging...

First I no longer have access to those reports on cost but I know they are substantial. So I directed you to a source that should have those costs. Yes Regional events are a revenue source but those revenues go to the associated chapter not the national. Only at the annual national event does the NCRS national take in that revenue. The NCRS main source of revenue are membership dues. At each of those events what the members pays for is to help cover the cost of having that event. Not the cost associated in creating said judging format. To make a club or business better one needs to know what the true cost of the new product produced verses what amount and type of income it will generate. Would you not agree?

Of course, but it's difficult or impossible to judge something until something is rolled out and tested to see actual results. If you try nothing, I can guarantee you will have 'nothing' as a result. Based on the latest GuideStar Form 990's filed for 2016, total revenue for NCRS is around 1,000,000. I know that's down from previous years but unless something different occurs, I would guess revenue will continue to go down. Even if you say the development cost is $20k or 2% of revenue, that sounds like a sensible investment for business growth.
