What kind of 4spd does my car have?

    Guys,

What kind of 4spd would my 69 350/350 non-AC car typically have? Need to order something for the
tranny but not sure what kind it is. I have confirmed it is original.

It would be a Muncie. GM did borrow some Saganaw transmissions one year but 10 to1 it's a Muncie. If it involves a cluster or input shaft, there were 2 ratios. If it's stock the rear end ratio would be a clue.

How did you confirm the transmission is original if you don’t know what kid of tranny it is?

      S/b a Muncie.

            Michael,

            This would definitely be a Muncie 4 speed trans. It could be either a M-20 wide ratio ( 2.52 / 1 ) or an M-21 close ratio ( 2.20 / 1 ) transmission.
The rear axle ratio is what determined the transmission selection. Axle ratio 3.36 and 3.55 used the M-20, while ratio 3.70 and 4.11 used the M-21. It is not likely that it would be a M-22 H.D. close ratio trans. Depending on what you need to order none of the above might not be relevant.

The only component differences between 1966-74 M-20 and M-21 are the input gear and the cluster gear. All other component parts are the same for either.

No Saginaw 4 speed transmissions ever used for a Corvette. However, 1978-E79 with L-48 did use a transmission which was formerly known as a Saginaw. By that time, manufacture of this transmission had been transferred to the Muncie, IN transmission plant so it was referred to by GM as a Muncie.

Someone told me that the Munci plant had a fire and GM borrowed the Saganaw. Now I did take a 4 speed job on a 68 Camaro and it had a Saganaw in it. BUT who knows what happened with that Camero? Might have been a automatic once.

Re: What kind of 4spd does my car have?

Dom, the 68 Camaro with the two 6 cylinder engines, the LF7 (327/210) and the L30 (327/275) engines all came with the Saginaw M20 transmission if ordered with the optional 4 speed, so it may have been original to the car.

The Saginaw 4 speeds were installed in Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas equipped with 6 cylinder or base 283 / 327 engines.
