68 headlight switch rebuild or replace

Does anybody restore '68 headlight switch or should it be replaced with a reproduction switch?

'68 switch has vacuum-ports to operate the headlight doors. This part seems to work ok. On the electrical side the detent when you pull the switch from parking lamps to head lamps is non-existent. Also the dimmer part of it doesn't work, no dash lights. Headlights, tail lights turn on with no problem. Are the re-productions any good or can I get the original switch restored?

All I can tell you is that I have heard of problems with the reproduction switches. Whether this has been now addressed, I do not know.

You could also seek out an NOS GM #1995191.

I've also heard these stories about these switches. I really would like to get the original restored. The vacuum side works fine it's the electrical side that is the problem (dimming of dash lights). My assembly manual shows this switch as #1995166. Is this the same switch? Again can anyone repair the electrical side on this switch? THanks.

It's almost always the electrical components of the switch that cause the problems and it's almost always related to dash light operation.

GM #1995166 was the original switch used in PRODUCTION and available in SERVICE. This was replaced by GM #1995191 in June, 1975. Both switches are functionally identical and virtually identical in appearance. No one could discern one from the other when installed in the car. I presume that GM made some improvements to the 1995191 to correct some deficiencies observed in service with the original switch. In fact, I installed a 1995191 to replace the original switch in my 1969 many years ago (at least 40 years ago) as a result of my having exactly the problems you describe with the original switch. I've never had a problem since. In addition, the 1995191 being the last available switch and available for 30+ years, you are much more likely to find an NOS example of that one than the original switch which was only available for 7 years and has now been discontinued for 43 years.

Yes, as usual, the Doc has this one figured out. While I was previously unaware of this, there are 2 reproductions of this switch on the market. The one that's proven problematic is the off-shore manufactured version. The other one is a Delco re-issue made in the USA. That's the one to get. The Doc has them.

Yep. He’s got them, and shows you how to tell them apart:

1968-1977 Corvette Headlamp Switch reissue GM 1995191 made in USA. CAVEAT EMPTOR: examine all of these images. The original GM ones have the 2 vacuum parts identified by raised numerals: a 2 and a 3. These are absent in the Taiwan import. ID Note: In the pictures with 2 switches: the USA switch is on the left & the Taiwan switch is on the right.

Thanks to all for your response. I spoke to the people at Dr. ReBuild and am convinced they have the correct headlight switch. However, to go through this amount of work to change it I think I should change the ignition switch as well (50 years old and key buzzer works only occasionally). Can this switch be fixed or is there a correct repo available?
