Can I hide additional sound deadener/insulation under the jute padding in my 69?

    Guys,

I'm thinking of adding an extra layer of sound deadener/insulation under my jute padding on my 69 coupe. Wondering if the judges "dig" under the carpet to find such things, or do they just look under for the jute and call it done? You think they could detect extra "thickness" of the floor covering and detect for that, even if they can't see it? I'm in Texas and need to do whatever I can to lower the heat in the cockpit.

Re: Can I hide additional sound deadener/insulation under the jute padding in my 69?

I had a bad interior heat problem in my '70. There were three types of of heat I tackled:

        - Convected- hot air was leaking through holes, gaps and seams in the bulkhead. A major source of hot air was a gap between the rear hood seal and body. Engine compartment air entered into the cowl then into the air plenum. Missing, damaged or old bulkhead plugs and seals also contributed to the problem. If an AC car, check the evaporator box for air leaks, including a leaking or missing drain flap. Also look for a torn or damaged lower shifter boot. A tear in mine was allowing hot air into the console.

        - Conducted- Hot coolant in the heater core warmed up the entire dash, even with the heater hose control valve closed. I don't need a big block with a heater in Texas, so I completely bypassed the heater core. Now, coolant merely circulates from the engine to the expansion tank and back. Not NCRS but made a huge difference.

        - Radiant- Floors and console became unbearably hot from engine and exhaust heat. 1/2" Dynaliner virtually eliminated this problem. Floors are now barely perceptively warm rather than unbearably hot. If I did this again, I would use their 1/4" or 1/8" material for a more stock look. The 1/2" pad gives a cushy, luxurious feel- nice but not original.

The car is now pleasent to drive.

Note that sound deadening material is different than heat insulation, so choose the right product.

You could possibly use the 1/2" Dynaliner instead of jute with the carpet, leaving just a bit of jute around the usual places where the judges might look for it.

              Gary,

I read the article you attached and decided to go with the Hushmat. I'll put some jute padding in strategic places as per Patricks recommendation.

                Mike,

Hushmat worked great in my '64. Like one of the posters said a lot of heat comes from the firewall.

BTW, if you order directly from Hushmat, they used to give a NCRS discount. Heard from others that betters prices on e-bay & Amazon can be found.

Yeah I ordered from Ebay. Tried to order from Hushmat but doesn't look like they sell direct anymore. Looked at a couple of local vendors and they were nearly twice the price of Ebay.
