electrical short

1971 LT-1 I rebuilt starter and bypassed the clutch safety switch. Turned on the ignition switch and when I turn it to start the interior lights go very dim indicating a bad short. I then ran a wire from the s terminal of the starter solenoid to a 12 volt source on the car with the ignition in the start position and got the same result. I had the starter checked on a machine and it was ok. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, Phil

Was it in the start position, or run position when you hot wired the solenoid?

Phil, I trust the ground cable is clean and makes good contract on the starter bolt.

Did the motor rotate when the starter was engaged?
