After much research and planning I have finally decided to attack a leaking heater core in my 1967 L79 Coupe with A/C. It is an un-restored survivor car which has never been apart. I had to replace the original radiator last year with a Dewitts and knew in time the heater core would need attention. This last summer it started leaking in the interior, dripping on the floor mat and sending antifreeze laden mist up thru the defroster duct.
As you can imagine this is a major job on a car with A/C. The factory Service Manual and Assembly Manual are only partially helpful. But after following the procedure and finding it incomplete and with a real lack of details, I am at a standstill. The ductwork, console and console side panels were removed without issue. Even the radio and clock were removed (for service) easily. Next came the heater hoses at the firewall along with the 3 speed nuts. The inside control cables, vacuum hoses and wiring were removed next. The service manual mentions to remove the last remaining nut holding the heater box from the inside- far right corner. No problems.
That's when the job got difficult. A small diagram in the assembly manual revealed another hex nut on the inside, upper left behind the instrument cluster. Now the heater box is somewhat loose but cannot be pulled away from the firewall. It is loose enough that I don't feel there is any other fastener holding it in place.
The only thing is if the old sealer is holding it but I do not want to pull too hard or pry on the composite heater box for fear it could crack. The bottom of the box is much looser than the top and can be pulled away from the firewall about 1/2". The top moves only 1/8"-1/4".
Now for the questions.
1. Could it just be the 50+ year old sealer holding it in place?
2. Could I have missed a fastener?
3. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for any and all responses.
Frustrated,
Rocco
