Re: 1967 Coupe with A/C Heater Core replacement

Just an update on the '67 Coupe A/C heater core replacement. My local radiator shop was able to locate original heater core stock from a company I believe is in Michigan. It was cut to length and they used my original tanks. See the attached photo.

The heater box was disassembled, cleaned and new foam door seals installed.

Mike, I was unable to get information on the bolt head inside the evaporator. Sorry.

There was a delay in actually installing the completed box due to the cold weather here in New Jersey, but today there was success. In about 3 hours, with the help of my good buddy, the heater box was installed and heater hoses hooked up. In our next session, the inside cables, vacuum lines, wiring, clock, radio, duct work and glove box will be worked on.

And now, on to the questions of the day. The A/C wiring harness had 2 strange looking light sockets that were hanging down behind the clock. Apparently Bubba was back there in the past and unhooked these lights. It appears they would be used to illuminate the upper A/C controls on the dashboard and that they should be installed inside the center, upper A/C dash outlet. There is slots in this duct where the control cables pass through and the flexible hoses attach to. Would these light sockets enter the duct in the same spot? How do these attach and in what direction and how are they oriented? I have attached a photo of one of these light sockets. The assembly manual does not show enough detail. The clock light sockets are of a different design.

I appreciate all the assistance so far on this difficult project but I am over the worst and hope there are no other major issues.

      Rocco,
They go in the slots on the side of the clock. There should be green filters on the ends.
How did the heater to firewall gasket fit? I had a miserable time with mine, it seemed like the foam was too dense.
      Kind regards

Before putting the glove box back in I would suggest that you operate all the cables to see if they function as design. Be sure to look in the AIMs to understand the routing of the cables. Also would be a good time to test the heat and A/C to see if you need any other adjustment. The brass valve is prong to give problems.

Peter, Gary & Harry, Thanks for your input.

First, the foam gaskets were from LIC and were a little too dense. This made installing the nuts on the engine firewall side difficult, but once the heater box was pushed into the firewall enough from the inside and the nuts started they pulled up tight.

Second, I already looked at the cable routing and will test movement before moving on. I already had problems (vacuum leak) with the brass valve and rebuilt it with new internal O-Rings last year.

Third, I did not notice green covers for the lights. Maybe MIA. I will double check. However, my clock does not have the slots like shown in the posted photo. See below the original clock (correct date code) from my car. It only has the holes for the clock light sockets.

            Am I missing something here?

Re: 1967 Coupe with A/C Heater Core replacement

              Rocco,

Peter is correct about where the left & right light bulb "hood assemblies" clip to. There's three of these lights on AC cars. The lower center clock mount metal housing clip (at bracket's 6 o'clock) is for the standard two heater & fan pull light. Then there's two more higher up (the top ends of the bracket curve) for the two upper AC pulls. Somebody had my two upper lights criss-crossed and they weren't properly illuminating the upper pulls. This is a no-brainer. Don't know who did that. I found it during the dash disassembly.

Here's a closeup of the '67 AIM C60 sheet E8 that clearly shows how the AC pull lighting hood assembly slides onto the clock bracket outer tips. Next I'm posting an excerpt in 2 parts from a thread titled "Illumination of Bezels for Heater, Defroster, Fan, Radio for '67" by Richard Mozzetta and John Hinckley. Excellent post! Search it and read the whole thing. Take care Rocco. Hope this helps. Mike

Re: 1967 Coupe with A/C Heater Core replacement

One last thing Rocco. It's been many years since I disassembled my '66 dash so my memory's wearing thin. Back me up on this Peter.

There's a distinct difference between the center lower light assembly for the 2 middle dash pulls. Maybe its wiring color or that it has a wider spot light than the upper two light assemblies? Or two light holes that shine on the middle pulls?

If memory serves me correctly the upper two lights only had a single spot light which will only shine correctly on the outer pulls if installed on their respective sides. Mine were criss-crossed.

I noticed that you said you didn't have any of the clear green plastic end covers on your lights? All 3 were missing? Like Harry posted, they repro these and are easily replaced.

                Mike

                  Rocco,
Mike is correct the left and right hoods have single windows and need to be oriented so they illuminate the upper controls. They are in there own harness that plugs into the fuse box. The center hood has multiple windows and illuminates the lower controls, it is part of the main harness along with the sockets for the clock.
                  Kind regards
