Oil fill cap

1. Would anyone know if there a specific part number for the oil fill cap on a L71 (427/435 BB) and, if so, what the number is?
2. Does anyone have a picture of this cap?
3. Am I correct that this cap was used on a large number of other cars , i.e. other than corvette? The reason I ask this question is that I seem to remember a thread from years ago which discussed this but I Have not been successful at finding it in my searches.....?

GM #3835665. All 1967 Corvette with 427 except L-89. Many other Chevrolet applications.

Bob,
There are many examples of this particular cap on Ebay. If you type in the part number Joe lists above it in the search box it will take you right to them. This is an interesting cap. Its a stant, and besides the S in the rivet it also as the SMC logo stamped on it, like many original gas caps have on the underside.
There are some originals listed with original packaging,but I would double check with Joe to make sure you get the correct one. They are also pretty pricey!!!

You can buy a Stant #10066 oil filler cap for about 3 bucks at most auto parts stores. Paint it black and you will have a cap that is about 90% correct in configuration. By the way, I do not think that all of these caps were originally electroplated black. I think that most were actually painted.

A little more information:

The GM #3835665 was the SERVICE oil filler cap for 1965-67 big block. It was not used in PRODUCTION for those. It had a natural finish since, presumably, it was intended to be painted with the engine assembly, either in PRODUCTION for those applications for which the cap was painted with the engine or prior to SERVICE installation for any cataloged SERVICE application.

For 1965-67 big blocks (except 1967 L-89), the cap used in PRODUCTION was GM #3856959. This cap was never available in SERVICE. It was the same as the above-referenced except that GM specs called for it to be externally painted with black enamel.

I have seen some reportedly NOS examples of the 3835665 which were painted black. I believe these were actually either GM #3856959 packaged under GM #3835665 or they were 3835665 which GM SERVICE PARTS otherwise instructed to be painted. Parts customers don't like being handed a rusty part which is what a "natural" finish steel item could become in storage.

1967 L-89 and all 1968-70 big blocks used oil filler cap GM #3851735. This was a chromed version of the 3835665.

Bob - you asked for a picture - here is a picture of the cap on my '67 L71 which I believe to be original. If you look carefully below the S rivet in the photo you can see the Stant Manufacturing logo stamped into the cap.

Dave and Keith can you post a photo of both the bottom of the NOS Caps , from top view they all look the same it all about the both ears on the bottom is how there shape are that's where the differents is from a Original and Repro.
