    I.D. solid lifter from 1966 L-72

Attachments show dissected solid lifter from a 1966 L-72 that had been in motor from at least 1975.

Note approx. 45 thou. offset hole in disc.

Also note slight raised ridge on bottom of pushrod cup.

Curious as to mfg. with this construction.

Thanks for any replys, Doug M.

All big blocks with mechanical lifters originally used "piddle valve" type lifters. That is also the type shown in your photo.

However, there were several different part numbers used over the years. The first was GM #5232439 which was used from 1965 through early 1966. Late 1966 through early 1967 used GM #5232530. Late 1967 through 1968 and, possibly, early 1969 used GM #5232550. 1969 through 1971 used GM #5232695. I'm sure there are slight differences between all of these lifters but I've never examined known examples of each to determine just what the differences are.

The GM #5232439 was discontinued from SERVICE in April, 1967 and replaced by the GM #5232550. The GM #5232530 was discontinued from SERVICE in February, 1967 and replaced by the GM #5232550. The GM #5232550 was discontinued from SERVICE in November, 1969 and replaced by the GM #5232695. The latter was finally discontinued without supersession about 20 years ago.

I believe the lifter in your photo is a GM lifter and likely either a GM #5232439 or 5232530.

      Joe,

I was particularly interested with the small hole in disc, as a recent comp. cams lifter that I inspected was lacking the disc hole.

Thanks again Joe, as I am always amazed and grateful for the information you share with us in our hobby.

Below see photos of the internals and externals of a GM #5232550 mechanical lifter. This is the lifter actually used for mechanical lifter big blocks from about about 1967 through about 1969. It is very similar to the 1965-E1967 GM #5232439 and 5232530.

By the way, while I only show the bottom side of the pushrod seat component of the lifter, the top side appears identical to the one shown in your photo.
