Try a thin washer. The only reason is to keep a gap between them.

Thanks guys. The Paragon spacer looks the same, just like a garden hose gasket. I just can't get the the clip on without removing the spacer. There's not much room to operate, and the clip groove is barely visible without the spacer.

What year? I've restored two untouched 65's and there was no spacer even though the A.I.M. called for one.

Mine is a 67, and I don't remember any spacer in it when I disassembled it a few years ago. I got worried about it when I saw it in the Paragon catalog and the assembly manual.

My 67 had the spacer and when after a restoration of the wiper motor I replaced it with a new one. NO problems installing anything.
