hi- just got my 1959 master cylinder back from re-sleeving at a reputable vendor obtained from this site. problem is it leaked by the bronze washer behind the 1 1/4" nut (see photos). i have tried tightening but afraid i will strip threads or break the casting. i could use an an impact wrench or large torque wrench but does anyone know how much torque is required? i assume a sealer would not hold up to brake fluid. i probably can return to vendor when they re-open but trying to avoid removing it, shipping, etc. thanks, jim o.

The first thing I would do is try replacing the copper washer. It was GM #5450212 but it was discontinued without supersession in May, 1969. There must be replacements out there, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: master cylinder leak
I had a bear of a time getting the one on my 58 to seal. Ended up being a burr on the master cylinder mating surface. A couple passes with a flat file, a new copper washer and it finally sealed.
Check both surfaces, the master cylinder and the fitting to make sure they are flat and don't have any burrs or dings in them. The copper washer is soft and will compress to fill small imperfections but it only goes so far........
You can get new copper washers at most any auto parts store (NAPA) and most of the usual vendors

Re: master cylinder leak
To my eyes it looks like the big nut needs more tightening. But I don't see a copper washer between the brass block and the big nut. Is there one there?

Re: master cylinder leak
yes the smaller washer is there and sealed fine. i will get a get some more large washers, try carefully smoothing the surfaces, and annealing seems worth a try. sounds like its just one of those trial and error issues. thx, jim- Top

Re: master cylinder leak
I too have had good luck resurfacing the faces where the nut seats against the copper washer.
I have a lathe and everything looks like a job for one! Cleaning up the face of the washer would be a easy job.
I might use a file now the master cylinder as it is already mounted. Otherwise I would recommend sandpaper and a flat surface.
You can annealing copper brake washers easily by heating them red hot and letting them air cool. Even YouTube videos on annealing brake washers. I recommend annealing your washer mostly because it is so easy. Many auto parts dealers will have an assortment of washers. Possibly you will get lucky.
I have started to look at everything with magnification. I am in my 60's and am finding out the hard way I have been missing things.
Latest was the condition of the sealing rubber on my radiator cap. Looked good till I used magnification, then the set of the rubber was obvious.

Re: master cylinder leak
have found that using the aircraft EZTurn sealer with new washers work great to seal a C1 master cylinder. I use this on all brake & fuel line connections. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catal...ezturnlube.php

Re: master cylinder leak
Terry,
EZTurn can be bought at most airplane parts suppliers if you have a local private airplane parts house near you.

Re: master cylinder leak
success. thanks to all of the advice. i cleaned up the mating surfaces with a sanding block, annealed a new copper washer, and bought a 6-sided 1 5/16" socket. got it 99% sealed which was much better than before but the final fix was to zap it few times with an impact wrench. ordered some EZ-turn for future use.- Top
