    Re: 1964 Vent Window Cranks

I spent all afternoon putting the passenger door back together with all the right parts, rebuilt rgulators and the correct door locks that operate in the correct direction. The drivers door is up tomorrow. Found some non hardening white putty and black tape.

Good job. Your car looks great!

The regulators are a pain. Even NOS ones have to be disassembled to get the old factory grease out. The NOS gearboxes, I acquired, had grease in them that looked more like pine sap than grease. Even had the consistency of pine sap.

Here is a picture of one (NOS in the box) with the cover drilled off. Shows the factory grease or what ever they used.

With new or used gearboxes, I recommend taking the one cover off and cleaning them out and replacing the grease at the very minimum.
Doesn't matter if they are NOS or used. It pretty much has to be done.
This can be done while leaving the round cover installed. The long flat cover can be drilled for screws and reinstalled.
When I took apart the doors I found one wing window gearbox cover in the bottom of the door, it had turned so hard it forced the cover off the factory aluminum rivets. One gearbox had completely failed and the other was so stiff it was unusable.

Nice work Patrick. Attention to detail is obvious.

Richard, After you removed all of the old grease what type of grease did you replace it with?

          Thanks Bob

I replaced it with White Lithium grease.
Everyone has an opinion on what is best, the White Lithium was mine.
Mostly because I had it on hand. Also used it on the window tracks.
