Ignition Switch Won't Go to Lock

Hi all,

My '57 ignition switch won't go into the Lock position, so I can't get the mechanism/tumbler out. Any ideas on what to do?

I had same issue on my '60 from worn out internals.
I took a pair of pliers and worked the key back and forth until it slipped into the locked position to remove the cylinder. (used an old key and a rag for protection)
Pete Lindahl rebuilt the unit and it now works great.

Hi Bob,
Since no one has responded, I thought I might. I have/had a very similar situation with my current 64 ignition switch. I'm sure you probably have already done this, but just in case you haven't, don't be offended by my personal experience/suggestion. I finally was able to put my switch in the LOCKED position by jiggleing the key force-ably - in & out, up and down, turning clockwise all at the same time and it moved to LOCKED and I was able to remove the tumbler. Bob, I had the same problem while restoring my 57. I tried various sprays to no avail. I used high pressure air to clean out all of the stuff
I sprayed, then used a dry graphite recommended by a locksmith friend. After inserting the key, moving it in and out, back and forth while continually using the graphite it just moved into the lock position then the magic paper clip to remove the tumbler. Graphite is magic, I have used it on all 0f my restorations, for door, trunk and of course ignition locks. Good luck.
