Re: 1981 Carb.
Jeff,My 81 has a California Carb but is not a California car. The date code is within 4 days of the build date so I think that’s how it came. Has anyone else noticed this? I know of one other car with the same situation. I lost a lot of judging points for the wrong carb.
St Louis or Bowling Green? Month Built?
Curious, how many points lost?

Is it likely carburetors manufactured in Rochester, NY were installed four days later on cars in St. Louis, MO?Mark Edmondson

Re: 1981 Carb.
It just says what the part number is on the carb and that it's California. I don't mean for this to be a criticism of the judge or the process. I'm not complaining. I'm just wondering if this could have been a substitute part considering the end of the run was near in St Louis. Also, there wasn't a performance penalty for being a California car so really no harm done.- Top

Re: 1981 Carb.
If you believe it to be original to the car as shipped from the factory, your VIN's buildsheet will confirm the broadcast code. A new edition is about to be released for the 1973-74 TIMJG and this was written in the article published in the most recent edition of the Corvette Restorer
If there was one take-away lesson from this eighteen monthjudges, is that when in doubt of originality, the benefit of the doubt goes to the owner. My point is before chasing what the manual says is a correct carb, explore the availability of documents that will either prove or disprove your claim...it's original to your car. Apparently, this was the basis for their decision and the carb scoring zero.

Re: 1981 Carb.
Jeff,Thanks Tom. I wish I could find more documentation. I have a tiny scrap of the tank sticker. No one that I’m aware of has docs for a late St Louis car. I was wondering if anyone had any evidence that the carb may not match the car from the factory. It seems odd to me that a California carb would have been used as a replacement. I was thinking of chasing the manual. The wrong carb will prevent me from reaching Top Flight. The car works too good to make that step right now.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Re: 1981 Carb.
Jeff I am pretty sure that 81 is a one year only carb. ( electronic mixture control) chances of it having a with a date code to meet your build date is even more rare. 4 days before your build is certainly possible. as there were Corvettes being built at St louis is 81.I would not touch anything as Tom R. says, get a broadcast sheet from the Corvette Museum.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

1980 California cars also used this carburetor. My understanding is, in this instance, other than part number stamping, differences between California carb and other states is only internal.

Re: 1981 Carb.
How do you know its not a California car? Engine suffix code...what is it?
What's code on the Carburetor?
What code is on the emission sticker?Tom Russo

Re: 1981 Carb.
Jeff - Pics & part numbers of your carburetor?
Are you saying that you have the 17081218 Carburetor?
What is your emission label number? 14030097?
You do not say which transmission?
What engine suffix code?
Following the thread to learn more as 1981s are not discussed much. Thank you!
p.s. The wrong carb should not be nearly enough to prevent the car from a Top Flight, should it?
