    74 Original Brake Drum Question

Are there any identifying features/markings to identify if 74 brake rotors are original to the car? There is no mention of the drums in the current 73-74 judging manual except that the original finish was sand cast.

    Thank you,
    Vic

I don't recall any markings that would identify them as original although there might have been a GM casting number on the front hubs.

However, one fairly accurate indicator is whether the rivets that attach the rotor to the front hub or rear spindle have been removed. If they have been removed, it's fairly likely, although not certain, that the rotors have been replaced. I don't think that front rotors with hubs have ever been available in the aftermarket and the GM assemblies, when available, were identical to the originals and could not be discerned from originals.

The exception to the above would be cases in which new replacement rotors were re-riveted to the hubs or spindle but that's really a very small segment of the Corvette population.

A quote from the forward page of the Chevrolet Service Department Product Identification Manual states: "Identification of parts and assemblies is by build date. When a build date is not used, components are identified by marks, material, color or size." In the Brake section of this manual for '74 & '75 it indicates the rotor build date is stamped on the rotor disc next to the rotor hub. Keep in mind this relates to all Chevrolet product series and the Corvette may be an exception.
