    C1 Rebound strap Installation

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to install rebound straps on my 61 Vette. the body is on the frame and straps have never been installed since restoration. Any one have any suggestions on compressing the springs enough to install the straps ? Can I add enough weight into the trunk to do this ? Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks,

Ed, Yes much weight helps. You could also use a ratchet strap, just be careful when you release it.

Last one I did was on a 61. I was changing leaf springs so I already released the axle U-Bolts. That made it very easy.

      Richard,
Thanks for the advice I appreciate it, I'll give the straps a try but I am concerned about releasing them. What size ratchet straps did you use ? The pic's were great.

      Regards,

      Ed

Ed, I recall 2 inch. It is tough to release. Try lots of weight, one side at a time. It's more safe.
You need as much slack as possible.

          Richard,
Nice clear photos, did you buy the tool from Corvette Central or make you'r own.

          Thanks Bob

Bob, I borrowed it so not sure. I remember I had some trouble getting the outer attach bolts aligned. I used studs instead. The backer bar has threaded holes to clamp the 2 pieces together. I threaded the 2 studs into the backer bar first, then aligned the front clamp bar over the studs. Then added the washers and nuts to clamp together. This made it easier to assemble the tool before setting the rivets.

Here are a few more photos for reference.

Here is the CC tool. Looks similar to what I used.

                Ed,

All rivets on the rebound straps always point to the front. This was a factory procedure to always install them from the rear because this was the fastest way and that's what an assembly line has to do.
