    Ac 212cw -

    Regarding the correct 212CW for 1971 -
The 70-72 TIMJG states there are 6 notches around the perimeter, however everyone I find has 8 notches.
Including the older chicken wire soldered filters.
Is the notation of 6 notches a mistake?

    Yup. A mistake. 212CW is 9-notches and 329C is 6 notches.
    Thanks for the catch !

OK, I'll bite. Does the 212CW have 8 or 9 notches?

          Patrick, yes, 7th Edition. But...

Gary Beaupre, depends on what version of filter your looking at. I have an old square chicken wire 212cw, it has 12 notches. I have a newer expanded metal 212cw, it has 8-notches. I have four -329c filters, they have six notches. So, (6+8+12)/3=8.666, rounded up 9. I know, not the answer your looking for.

I wonder if it's a year thing, a different mold thing, or???

          More research.

              So which element is correct?
I don't want to pay 75 for the wrong one much less 350 which is the price range I have seen on 212CW's with Expanded metal screen.

James, your car should have an expanded metal filter, not the chicken wire filter. Those are not that expensive.
I can't answer how many notches, but I don't think the C3 judges will NOT deduct for that anyways. If they do, it should be a minimal deduct.

I have (2) NOS 212CW air filters. One with the expanded screen and one with the square. Now because of you guys, I have to go and dig them out to see how many notches that they have. I will get back with a post.

Ron, when did the design change from wire to the expanded metal? Did expanded metal start with production line or service replacements?

                              Gene,

I believe it started in production in 1970. However there may be conflicting replies to your question because we have seen seeing advertisements and ads with the expanded configuration and some with square. My opinion is they stopped the square configuration in 69 and in 1970 I believe they started with the expanded metal. Some of my judging counterparts may have a different opinion.
