    Re: 1967 L79 M20 reared

When the students were trying to get the correct stamping for the rear on Gary's 1967 (AO Smith Corvette) they reported it was a CA. CA is the designation for a 1963-4 3:36 rear.
It was hard to see the stamping at the time and I had a discussion with Gary that I would follow up on this for him since he was gracious enough to bring his beautiful 1967 to the Judging Retreat so that students could poke around and examine it. We were not really sure what the correct stamping was on his rear, but CA was what they thought they saw. From what I could remember his 1967 had a June or July build date on the engine pad. It was an original engine. Also the starter motor and alternator were original.
I have reached out for Gary.

      Re: 1967 L79 M20 reared

As the fog lifts off this old brain and memory, here are some additional facts concerning the rear in Gary's 1967 AO Smith Corvette.
Three different students stated that they thought that the partial rear stamping was CA. I discussed this with Gary and he stated he had a photo of the rear in his restoration photos. However, he was unable to find it. We both agreed the perhaps the students were mistaken and that he would obtain the photo of the rear and that I would reach out to him for further discussion. I have reached out for him and I am awaiting a response.

        Pat,

Gary posted the photo in his opening post. The code is AO..... 1967 3:70:1.

          Re: 1967 L79 M20 reared

Guys. Thanks so much for the insightful responses. I'm a little less confused. As I said to Pat F. via email. I had the car up on the lift yesterday. Tried to clean the flange where the code/date is stamped. No paint. No crud. And I still get “AO 6 29 6”. Today I'll go back out and try to get a look/pic of the casting date on the side as Gary S. suggested.

I like JR's response "Parts were not sitting in a row by serial number or production waiting for the next car to come down the line." My brother-in-law (quite a Chevy nut) had the same thought before I read JR's response.

Good news is I signed up for the Texas Chapter Meet Judging at LSCC in May. Maybe some more face-to-flange time will shed some light. Thanks again Tim!

Gary, thanks for the photo of the rear in your 1967 Corvette. Wishing you the best in your next adventure with NCRS.
Just a side note to the Judges Retreat, the experience level went from 7 points before the Retreat to over 300, with a couple of 200's.
The students provided a wide range of knowledge coming to the Retreat.

This is where I see a 7 after the 6.

Here are a couple of photos of Gary's 1967. Yes the paint was discussed. A lot of original parts to this 1967 AO Smith Corvette.

                    Gary,

If you take ten people and ask them if they see the 7 that Rich sees, you're going to get 9 people who don't see it. Plus me.

...and my eyes are not that great these days!

If you stand back from the photo at different angles, it actually shows it better for me. However, it could be one of those situations where the mind really wants to find the 7, so a image of it appears to the brain.

One more? I gotta say I'm not really seeing it.

                            Gary,
I have to agree with Rich after seeing the last photo you posted.
I have no doubt it's the original rear end regardless.
                            Kind regards

Maybe it is my brain playing tricks, but I see the very faint "7" in post #26 as Rich suggests. I didn't see it on my laptop screen a couple days back, but I now see it on my larger screen desktop monitor.
