    1958-1960 Judging Guide 5th Edition questions - ch-ch-ch-changes

I recently picked up the 1958-1960 5th Edition judging guide and it is very impressive. Well worth the money as a resource, aside from its importance to NCRS judging. I found a number of changes and a lot of information in greater detail with numerous photos.

A few things caught my eye as they relate to 1959 specifically changes from the 4th edition and I was hoping someone in the know could comment... (especially on the generator and fan)

    * Tung Sol AP273 flasher now approved. This shows up in the AIM so I was gratified to see that.

    * Radiator Fan now is now 17 5/8” instead of 17”. In 4th edition guide it mentions occasionally 18" being seen. The 57 AIM and 59 AIM both show fan 3735314 which shows as 17" in the 1959 parts catalog. The 17 1/2" fan is 3739265 which corresponds to the well known passenger fan in my 59 parts book. So I guess this change came about from looking at bowtie cars, but I never really heard any rumors of this being in question. Anyone have any context or history on this?

    * Generator 1102059 now must be closed solid end - no thick oval cadmium plug in the end. So now there is only 1 design instead of 2 for the 30 AMP '059. In the 4th edition guide the closed end (1st design) was for '58, while the thick plug (2nd design) was for early 59 and 1102174 for mid '59 to '60. The 1102174 generator has a stamped cad plug and is the same in 5th edition. Any ideas what became of the mystery "2nd design" '059 30 AMP generator?

    * Voltage regulator 9001 now must have “D” at end of stamp. When I've looked around I've tended to see regulators from 58/59 with a 'C', 60's with a 'D' and '61 with an 'E', but I'm no expert. Anyone know what that letter means?

    * Ballast resistor now has U-shaped cutout for 59/60 like the resistors up to '67 (instead of half moon which is still correct for '58). This was interesting and understandable since I imagine they broke a lot of the years and got replaced with one with a "U" that might get confused as a replacement.

    * 3rd arm is now painted semi-gloss black. Some felt it was raw, other painted before. I've always been in the painted camp, since I could tell mine was painted when I unbolted it.

Changes I was surprised not to see...
    * I've seen a lot of hardware on my car that was yellow cad like the hooked door weatherstrip clips, hat-shaped speed nuts under dash, and other "exterior" bolts, brake parts. A lot of this stuff is hidden from a judge so I can understand that.

    * Many folks have said they found cheap silver paint in the engine valley between heads and intake on aluminum intake cars (fuelies and dual-quad). Is this still controversial I guess?

    Good stuff!

I reread the guide and it seems to me the Voltage Regulator 9001 "D" letter is an example. Any options or insight on the other things?

I was rereading my old post and it occurs to me that the mystery "2nd design" 1102059 generator seems to be a misreading of the 4th edition guide where there is a sentence between discussion of the '059 and the 1102173 that says "Later generators through 1960 used an open hole bearing carrier with cadmium plated plug retaining the rear bearing". The 1102173 of course is open cast cad plated dust cap rather than closed cast bearing cap. I know others interpreted it the same way, by the way the section flows and told me about the generator type I ended up getting.

Anyway, recently I found an 1102818 Delco generator having the correct end plate. It's 6 volt, 45 AMP for GMC trucks. The end plate exactly matches the current 5th ed. guide and switched out with no problem. Front plate is also good. The armature is much too long though, so the generator as-is can't really be used interchangeably without a new armature and conversion to 12 volt. Hope this helps folks. See below:

        Ian,

You have some thoughtful comments which should interest the authors of the JG. It would be interesting to read their feedback.
