In part 2 I'll cover the aluminum housing used from 1962-72. This housing was used for the following Corvette applications:
1962-----all with Powerglide
1963-67---all with 327
1965-----L-78
1968------with 327 and manual transmission
1967-69-----L-88 and ZL-1 except THM
1970-72-----ZR-1
There were 2 and, possibly 3 different part numbers for the housing used over the 1962-72 period. 1962-about 1967 used GM #1957885. 1967 may have used GM #1967319. I have no information on this part and I cannot confirm that it was ever actually used for 1967. If it was not, then the GM #1957885 was likely used. 1968 used GM #1968122 which also became SERVICE for 1962-67 after 1968. The 1968122 is now GM-discontinued. All of the housings use the "1 long and 1 short" bolt attachment. The short bolt is 1-27/32" long and the long bolt is 4-21/32" long.
Below find the GM #1957885 and 1968122 side-by-side:

Here is another version of the 1968122. Note that this version has a few minor differences from the above. Most notably, there are very small "buttresses" seen on the flange which attaches to the the starter frame. While I believe that these "buttresses" may be present on some examples of the 1968122, they are certainly not present on all. However, I don't believe these will ever be found on the 1962-67 GM #1965885.
