    interesting 57 283

    came across a 57 cast # 548 block. interesting point is the suffix stamped on the block's pad that has beautiful factor broach marks. pad reads F0809L. I could no application for the L suffix. any ideas? Mike

        Note also, assuming the correctness of the chart, that it's a 265, not a 283.

          I looked thru all my books and googled the suffix but couldn't find the L engine. should I have googled SBC truck suffix? THANKS TO ALL. MIKE

            My March 1957 Chevrolet Parts Catalog lists the "L" code for 1957 truck models "31-32-36-3800-4000" with the description " Trademaster "265".

              David,

              Thanks for mentioning Trademaster 265 in your reply. I'd never heard that term, but after googling it and reading the different results, I learned about it and the Taskmaster. Interesting SBC history.

                IIRC the 1957 265 blocks were painted a yellowish color

                  That was true but only early in the model year. By the end of the model year passenger car 265s were Chebby orange, just like their 283 big brothers.

                      Interesting, Gary, because that is after the supposed change over to red/orange paint. I have a never-apart 265 assembled July '57 which is Chebby orange.
