Re: 63 Corvette Sebring silver
How do you judge a color for correctness? It would of course have to be lacquer to be 100% correct.
It is well established the lacquer formula used in the 60's is no longer available.
Wouldn't the judges give 100% if it's close in tint?
Other deductions for application and condition of course, I am considering the tint only.
Such a subjective thing as color would be very difficult when one is attempting to match the original exactly.
Even the originals would have likely changed slightly in hue over the years depending on exposure and storage.
If the color is missed by a mile full deduction just like a color change.
However, the standards shouldn't be impossible to obtain.
How is this handled in judging?- Top

Re: 63 Corvette Sebring silver
Just went through it at back to back regionals. The color was matched to original paint on the car and the 63 Color book. Here is the car at 2 different events. There were no issues with the metallic content or the application. You can see how lighting changes the tint of a color. Good luck!- Top

Re: 63 Corvette Sebring silver
I know you cannot get the original 63 lacquer formula. We mixed up the formula that they call for and painted it on to a test piece of fiberglass and put the correct clearcoat that they called for and it did not match a piece of the original 63 Corvette Sebring silver that I have. So I am sure there is a modern car that has the correct shade of silver without going through making a one off color. Does anybody know what car would have this correct shade?- Top

Re: 63 Corvette Sebring silver
I have recently matched some Corvette Metallics and the closest I have gotten is to scan an actual car then reduce the metallic by 25% then try your spray outs and adjust from there. --- going from the converted formula you end up with a color NO WHERE CLOSE.
I saw the The Jay Cline original paint Z06 at the regionals and took photos... it has VERY NICE COLOR and Metallic and should be easy to compare with a spray out.James A Groome
