c3 big block on engine stand/dolly

Can I use the flywheel to crankshaft bolts to support a c3 big block on a dolly/stand without damaging the crankshaft; bearings; seals? The flywheel is attached and I will use four bolts removed from the flywheel to mount on the dolly/stand. Photos to follow...thanks and regards...Joe

Your engine stand is designed to attach to the 4 bell housing bolts NOT the crank shaft..... That is why the adjustable arms are adjustable. Get some longer bolts to make the attachment thru the short pipes on the arms. You'll need to remove the flywheel.

Edit: a complete big block weighs a LOT. Your engine stand might not be adequate to handle the load. Be careful.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. I hoped that the flywheel bolts would work, but I saw some potential issues (as I mentioned). I just need to find the grade 8 bolts long enough because the flywheel is kind of in the way. I think when I originally moved the motor, I used some bolt holes in the front of the motor. The water pump; fan and other paraphernalia were off the motor at that time. I'm glad to hear your input. Thanks for your response and regards...Joe

OBTW: just for my own info: what DOES that monster weigh?

Without seeing the engine stand, you need to make sure it can support the engine. I would imagine it weighs about 800 pounds. You may need to add support gussets to the stand, on the sides and in the front. I would use grade 8 bolts. Also you may need to upgrade the casters on the stand. Just some thought.

Thanks...I used this stand to hold and move the motor before, so I'm pretty comfortable. I have since added the carb, water pump; fan' A/C bracket (not compressor), but nothing TOO significant. Definitely grade 8 bolts, even though I used 1/2 inch carriage bolts the last time this stand was used. Thanks again for the insight...800#? Hmmm...I ain't too surprised,,, I was (and am ) concerned about the crank/bearings/seals etc.
          Regards...Joe

Grade 5 bolts are more than adequate.

Are you saying I should bolt the aluminum bell housing on first and then bolt the stand to the bell housing?

I use old starter bolts. They're the right length and thread for my engine stand. Seems like there are always a handful on top of the magic bolt bucket too.
