    C1 Rear Axle Bearing

It looks to me like the shoulder on which the bearing rests inside the axle tube on my '62 is worn back. Does anyone know how deep that shoulder should be from the outer surface of the axle? Shouldn't the bearing sit right up against that shoulder? I know the bearing is 1" wide but I'm wondering if the shoulder should be in around 3/4" since the bearing retainer has a concave area of about 1/4"where it fits over the bearing. Also, there's a collar on the shaft which I don't think should be there. Maybe installed at sometime to keep the bearing in place due to the worn shoulder? Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Rick

It is hard to tell from 1st picture if it is worn. The bearing doesn't rotate on the axle, it is a pressed fit. Are both sides the same? I have an extra rear end housing out in the shed, later today I will go measure it. The collar belongs on the axle. The bearings sits close to being flush. Check the archives for articles from Tom Parsons about rear ends and axles. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Terry! If you could measure the extra rear end you have, that would be great. If the bearing sits close to being flush with the end then maybe it's okay but what bothers me is that the shoulder is not a flat machined surface, which I expected it would be. Both sides appear to be worn and as best I can tell with my crude measuring technique, one side is roughly .040" deeper than the other. Thanks, Terry.

I sent you an e-mail, the shoulder is rough.
