    1981 Alternator Identification Question

    Good Afternoon,
I am reading the latest judging manual for the 81. I am trying to decode the date on my alternator. The casing is hard to see in the picture, In section A of the picture i believe that 1105 495 is stamped. In section B Y94? and on the bottom 0084 1. does anyone have a source that would give me a clear definition of the date code for the 1981 automatic car alternator?
    Thanks for your help

I'm guessing this alternator was rebuilt and this is what happens when the bead blast operator gets too aggressive around the codes/numbers.

Having said that, I would guess (assuming its original to the car, or perhaps not):
    • A is the part number = 1101075
    • B = ?
    • C = date code = 0084 1 where 0 is month, 08 is day of the month and 4 is the year. The 1 is the shift.

But then I doubt this reconciles with the vehicle build date. Try taking white sheet a paper, lay it over and use a pencil, rubbing it over to see if it will give you a better set of numbers.

If the part number actually is 1105495 then this alternator is not original to the car. While 1105495 is a legitimate alternator part number, it's for some 1983 or 84 application. I have not been able to identify, though, what the actual original application was. Most likely, this is a replacement rebuilt alternator which has gone through a commercial rebuilding operation.

        Re: 1981 Alternator Identification Question

Dawn - My original 1981 Corvette alternator has the part number, amp rating and date code stamped on the front of the case below the tension bolt hole. It was greatly concerning to me when I looked on the top of the case of my 1981 STL and could not find the stamped numbers where I was used to seeing them on nearly all other Delco produced alternators. In chapter flight judging, points were deducted from mine until I pointed out the location. One more thing that the TIMJG needs to be modified when we update it next time. The photo on page 74 shows 82 location on the front, but does not identify that 1981s can be there also. I have not seen any STL or BG alternator in 1981 with the top stamp, although I am sure that it may be possible.

It looks like your has been replaced at some point in its life.

I dont think I have an extra one with the front stamping, but I will check for you.

Great photo and depicts clearly numbers and codes, as I would expect and consisted with the 80-81 manual. I will add though, that the description as worded is confusing. No doubt Gary's has been replaced
