    Delco Packard Spark Plug Wires

I found some NOS Packard 440 wire-7mm part #1851208, & Packard 430 wire-7mm part #2964794, And Belden-7mm part #734803, all on 100 foot Spools. I am familiar with the 440 Packard spark plug wires, what is the difference with the Packard 430 wires, & the Belden wires? Maybe Joe Lucia can help?

Hi Barry, I see you are not getting a response so I will chirp in with this. Never even heard of the Packard wire. John

John, Packard 440 spark plug wire was what all the "Street Racers" used when the "Carbon Trace" spark plug wires failed, now making a comeback, because some of the "Repo" spark plug wires are failing.

As you know, the Delco-Packard 440 wire is a solid core spark plug wire sold in 100 foot spools under GM #1851908. It's still available from GM to this very day. However, I do not recommend it for any street application, at least any in which one wants to use a radio or other media player device.

I can't come up with anything on the Packard 430 wire. The 2964794 part number must be a very old part number, perhaps going back to the 40's or early 50's.

I just googled Packard 430 wire and it appears to be a stainless core wire if I understood it correctly. Sounds like good stuff, I think the Belden wire mentioned is a steel core like the 440.

To the best of my knowledge, Packard 440 wire is a copper core wire........with the copper strands being tin plated for corrosion resistance. Years (years) ago I believe it was just the bare copper, but somewhere along the way (mid-late 1970's) they began tin plating the copper.

Made many spark plug wire sets for my cars using this wire.

Hello Barry, LONG TIME, no visit. YES, we ''racers'' used Packard 440 in the old days. Stay well my friend. Do you still have your silver / silver 65 cp?

Not recommended for use with point replaceing electronic triggers such as Pertronix. Spiral wrapped wires better way to go.

Re: Delco Packard Spark Plug Wires

Finally had the time to check Spark Plug wires, Packard 440 & 430 wires are basically the same; 16 to 18 Twisted copper core wires with tin plating, measuring .0115" each wire, in the center of 7mm rubber coating.
Only difference is that the 430 wires have an imbedded "Braided Nylon Reinforcement" 1/2 way between the core wires & the 7mm outside. I believe the Packard 430 wires were considered to be the "Heavy Duty" option because of the braided nylon reinforcement inside the rubber.
The Belden wires had twisted tin plated copper wires, except there were 6 wires measuring .013" each wire, plus it also had the "Braided Nylon Reinforcement" 1/2 way between core wires & 7mm outside. Also "Heavy Duty". Barry Holmes
