On the side of the block in front of the starter is the casting date. If you are on your back it will be upside down.

My guess this was a poor attempt at a restamp and poor choice of the right block to start off with.

Appreciate the effort but neither of these two photos you have posted are relevant to your search. The key at this point is the very relavent block casting date.

It is located on the passengers side, on the side of the block ahead of the starter motor. It is a small font and upside down. Format is month (an alpha character), day (two digits), and year (one digit).

Also very useful would be a photo of the area of the block just above oil filter canister. There may be a large pipe plug there.

I would post photo examples but I am away from home.

            Good luck.

With this date code it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that this is an original engine. In addition, in combination with the other discrepancies (i.e. block casting number, engine code stamping, lack of visible VIN, broach marks), I'd say it is confirmed that this is not the original engine. Now, with this pretty much settled, the question becomes whether this car was even an original big block

if the car was restored or messed with over the years all the clues could be erased or added. at this point I would enjoy the car for what it is and not what it could have been

We need a better / clearer picture of the engine pad stamp. Cannot do much without that.

Pic 5 pad shows circular grinding marks across the pad. Broach marks MIA.

This is an example of what I believe is a real 1967 JA engine stamp pad.
