    1963 Tires

Time to replace my 20 year old tires.

Thoughts on Hankook Optimo H724 97S 205/75R15's. I only drive about 1000 miles a year.

    Thanks

I have those on 2 of my '64s, on Torque-Thrust American mags for driving, for 3 years now. They are good tires, Goodyear makes the same size and they are too.

All S-rated 205/75R-15 tires are basically the same. If it was me I would prefer a traditional American brand. By the same token I prefer European brands on my Mercedes and Japanese brands on my MR2. Goodyear, Firestone, Uniroyal, and General should have products in that size, too.

On my 60 I just bought a cheap set of Goodyears at Walmart online About $60 each They will dry rot before being worn out. At least they are American while Hankook tires are Korean tires made in China --- for the most part

Tire manufacturing is a global industry. Most, if not all, tire manufacturers have plants all over the world. Goodyear has them in China, Hankook has them in the U.S.

Thanks all, I'll see what I can find in a Goodyear WSW.

            Cheers

Which is what I've run for years, BUT, my last set were defective....the whitewalls kept yellowing no matter what I did to clean them (including light sanding) in a week or so they were yellow again. Something was leeching into the backside of the white portion. They were only a month old according to the DOT date. Discount Tire replaced them with the same tires and I'll be keeping an eye on them..

Maybe it was just a one-off defect...

Did your second set of Tiger Paws turn yellow as well?

YES ! Very frustrating and the Uniroyal rep's response was a joke - many friends have the same issues; this just started in the last 3 years it seems... Even sanding them got them close to white -- for about 3 weeks, then brown again.

I went with the Hankooks and they actually ride better and the whitewalls stay white - not crazy about the Buck Roger sidewall markings but there you have it. First pic is 2nd set of Uniroyals second is the Hankooks after 3 months and didn't even touch them yet.

                        Frank,
Thank you for the quick response, exactly what I was expecting, but was hoping for better news.
I wonder if anyone has experience with the Toyo Extensa WSW, their side wall is a little less space age.

I am assuming you have tried Wonder White? I does a great job of cleaning tires.
I understand the issue was with the tires and not the cleaning but I thought I would mention it anyway.

I purchased made in America Goodyears reproduction tires from these guys. Service was excellent.
But for drivers the inexpensive tires may be best as they age out before they wear out.

I tried Wesley's Bleach (formula has changed), Totally Awesome product and the 'ole Brillo pad scrubbing - only sanding with a foam block helped and not for long.... The Uniroyals are just a POS **** now IMO.. Some hard core owners have resorted to some sort of white paint on them, I'm not going through that. Maybe Port-A-Walls (ha!) They actually still sell them!
