    67 Corvette Wheel Weight Sizes

    Hi:
Does anyone know what the weight range for balancing weights were used? My question is was 1/2, 3/4, 1 oz, 1.5 oz, 2 oz, 2.5oz, 3 oz, 3.5 oz, 4 oz, 4.5 oz, and 5 oz all used? If not, which ones were? I did a search and came up with no answers. I did come up with the answer that no more than 5 ozs was applied to a wheel/tire combination. Thanks!

    Thomas,

Only multiples of 0.5 oz, up to 2.5 oz were used on the production line for C2s.

What would have happen if a tire required a weight higher than 2.5 ounces? Would it have been a quality control issue?

Up to 5 oz out of balance was acceptable, using combinations of the allowable weights. After that, I suppose remount or reject were the options.

Wheel weight info can be found in the 1967 Assembly Manual (similar to what has already been written):

Jack, also the bolt on wheels used a unique weight. Part numbers are listed under the optional wheel.

Mark- Indeed... and the listed weights went up to 3 oz for those optional wheels.

When I worked in the plants tire/wheel assemblies that needed total weight beyond the limit were rejected and disassembled. One common reason was excess soap/lubricant mix sloshing around inside the tire.

Re: 67 Corvette Wheel Weight Sizes

Ok..So I now have my tires mounted, and checked the static balance. Two of the tires need one oz each, and two tires need 4 ounces each.
According to the AIM (thanks Jack) provided, note 4 says (not paraphrased) that you can add weights to either side of wheel at rim edge, and splitting of weights may be done if desired. My question is did they add weights to both sides of the rim (2 ozs front 2 ozs rear) or could I just add two two ounces to the back side of the rim? My concern is that weights on the front would interfere with the clips on the trim ring. I thought I heard somewhere that weights were not placed on the front lip of the wheel. Thanks for any insight you can further provide.

Re: 67 Corvette Wheel Weight Sizes

I brought this point up once before, regarding paragraph #4 above. I was told the factory never installed weights on the rallye wheels on the outside, no matter what was printed in the A.I.M. Your reasoning is correct, they would interfere with the trim ring installation.
As an aside, your tire/wheel combos that need the 4 oz of weight to balance...you might try letting the air out of those two, rotating the tire on the rim 90* and see what happens. Just a thought.

                          Thanks!
I did rotate a couple of times to get the best balance possible.
