1965 Dash Harness Routing picture around alarm lamps and clips that hold harness in.

    Hello,

I am attaching my 65 Coupe instrument cluster wiring harness to the instrument cluster before installing the whole works in the car at once.
I cannot get both of the clips that hold the harness to the dash housing to insert in their holes. There does not seem to be enough distance between the clips. Harness is from Lectric Limited for a 65 with backup lights.
When I look at the aim it shows that the lamps for the brake and headlamp alarms and the high beam indicater lamp are all mounded down on the main body of the cluster and this looks like it would allow the harness to fit. However my cluster has the lamps all mounted on the metal piece that the tach and speedometer are bolted to so they and the top panel lamps are directly in the way.
I will call Lectric Limeted Tomorrow but wanted to make sure I wasnt missing something simple in the mean time.
If anyone could post a picture of the backside of their cluster with the harness connected I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks in advance!
    Bill

William, your problem is common with the repro harnesses, nothing fits quite right. Some say the M&H harness are better, but I think they are pretty much the same as the Lectric Limited. I have installed many of both brands, and each has its issues. Your approach of installing the harness on the cluster first is different, I have never done it this way and always install the harness in the vehicle first and then the cluster. Sometimes the two upper harness retainers go in as designed, sometimes not, those depend upon how the harness was assembled by the repro mfg tech I think. At any rate its so far up there that it really cannot be seen after installation anyways. At any rate, I'll be interested in hearing how your installation of harness to cluster and then into vehicle went. Getting all of the bulbs etc into it when installing a cluster has always been a PIA,

William, I've replaced the harness' on both my 65's. On one I used a M&H harness, on the other I used a LL harness. It is really tight around the area you are referring to with both. Neither harness fit better than the other. Here's 2 pic.s before replacement of each that show how the originals were routed. I always install the harness onto the cluster before installation since that's how the factory did it. It's much easier that way. Hope this helps.

Thank's to you both! I was just doing it that way because I think it will work better and because I understood that is how the factory did it!
        Thanks again

          Hello All,
I called Lectric Limited last week and they said to return the harness and if there was anything wrong when they looked at it they would fix it. I mailed it to them and they got it at 4:04 PM yesterday. I called them and they have already repaired it and are returning it to me today!!!!
Now THAT is what I call SERVICE! Hopefully it fits better when it gets back. I will let everyone know. Thanks again for your help.

            Hi,
I recently did my 65 with a LL. I had the same issue, but not as bad. I left mine a little proud of the bulbs (more away from cluster). When both ends are installed and secured it seemed strong. I did not have the forethought to call LL,

BTW, I had my dash out and pre-wired the whole dash and cluster on the bench. Installation was real simple.

            Good Luck

              Hello Again,
I Got my Harness back from Lectric Limited in just as few days and it fits like a dream. They also repaired the broken phenolic backing piece on the headlamp rollover switch connector.

I am EXTREMELY Happy with the Service they have provided me. Especially since I originally purchased this harness about 11 years ago!!
I would recommend this company to anyone!

                Hello Again,
Finally trying to put the cluster with the harness asemblyed to it in the car. Does the part of the harness that goes to the fuse block go over the crossbar and to the Firewall? or under the crossbar and to the firewall between the dash and the crossbar?
Cant tell to well from the AIM?
                Thanks again,
                Bill

It would be nice if both companies would make the gray wires a little longer

Hi James, I removed both the steering column and the seat completely from the car so that I could lay under the dash to look at things.
You might make sure that you got the right year harness. I think that they changed colors over the years as I have some original harnesses that have the colors you have. DO you have A/C IF so I would be really interested to know if the Harness that goes to the clock, and glove box and right side courtesy lamp switch were originally over both the Center A/C Corrugated Ducts. This seems to be how they need to go so that is how I ran them. My original harness was not in the car when I got it so I could not look at the old one to tell. Also my parking brake alarm wire Tan does not seem top want to reach the parking brake switch at the firewall. Everything else seems to be fine.
you can pm me if you want any more help. Also the LL harness has a black ign plug too and it does not have the tabs that go into the switch to lock it on. Might have to reuse your original if it is ok. I asked LL about that and they said that they can no longer get the correct connector.
OK I see you have BB so I gues A/C is out of the question!
                          Thanks

                              Hi James
Here is pictures of the ignition switch. Also Windshield wiper washer and backup switch connectors that go through the firewall they are possibly the wrong color blk/yel blk/lbl I think maybe originals were yellow and light blue but not sure you can look at yours to check.
