Assuming that you are talking about the top of the shock rod, it is round with flats on either side for the installation of a 1/4" wrench. This same configuration was used for all other Delco shocks of the period that I know of.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I will make the same assUmption as Joe L. That shape is known as a D or double D socket. There are several different sizes as that shape is used in other places than shock absorbers. The link is just one (the most common size) example.

Re: 1967 top of front shocks look like what???
The top of the stud was square so a 1/4 wrench would fit over it . The very top of the stud was concave because they rolled the threads . Through out the years Delco used differnat widths for the flat spot on the top. if you want pictures let me know and i will post them.- Top

The devil made me post thisI am happy to help Gary
I thought about putting a link to the Snap-on version, but I thought I would go more working class today. :-)
On a more serious note, there are many versions available from a variety of sources.

I never knew that socket existed either.
How many of us can remember holding that stud with a 1/4" open end wrench and the nut was hard to come off so you had to wrench and cuss the whole way. Worse, it was cold outside and your fingers were numb then you dropped the nut or something else. I miss the seventies..:-)- Top

Dick;
Borrowed this image from Dan Patch.
First we would clean the threads and then secure the shock shaft with the vise grip, at the enlarged area just below the threads,
and then remove the nut.
