1967 rag joint color

Page 167 of JM for 1967 shows the rag joint unpainted on the upper half, but then it also says that if the steering box is painted black, it all came as a unit and should be painted black, what is correct????? Also where came I get the plastic insulators that slip over the 2 studs sticking out there also? LI and paragon say no.

if the steering box is NOT painted, the rag joint is NOT painted

if the box is PAINTED then the entire rag joint IS painted

I'm correcting my earlier statement (question) about the rag joint painted/not painted. Looking at the AIM UPC 9A2 the entire rag joint was supplied as part of the steering box assembly. Therefore I agree with Daniel Young's reply, however, were the rag joint halves assembled after painting of the box to avoid paint on the fabric center??? Then you could potentially have the upper half unpainted........
