    C2 paint

I have what might be considered a survivor 67 roadster. I put the car back to it's factory original color, Lacquer, in the early 1980's. Since then, Lacquer paint has pretty much been outlawed, especially for people like myself who do not have access to a paint booth and all the scrubbers the Gov't. wants. This brings me to the question of what paint is accepted by the NCRS judges if Lacquer is no longer available?

William, You can use any type of paint but it must APPEAR to be lacquer. There are painters that are experienced in giving modern paints the attributes judges look for. The judges will use a flow chart when judging paint. You could contact Tom Ames the NCRS paint adviser, he is listed in the front of the Restorer magazine. Good luck, Don H.

      Don,

Thanks. I will look him up and send him an Email.
I painted this car in the early 1980's with the correct color Acrylic Lacquer. Now it is looking very tired and it really should be repainted. Knowing that i can use something other than lacquer, which is what I would prefer to use as it is pretty forgiving in less than ideal painting conditions, I just don't know where I can get any!

        Bill,

You can use any type of paint ( base coat, enamel, etc. ) as long as looks like it's factory applied with the various attributes the judges are looking for.

Lacquer is still available from a few sources..............but it is not the same lacquer you used in 1980. Lead has been removed and probably some of the other components are also a bit different.

TCP Global out in California is one source. Just Google the name and then go to their older car or classic car paints. Paint is made by PPG.

You might try just buffing the lacquer paint on the car first. You might just be amazed at the results. Lacquer tends to oxidize and fade over time.

              Interesting thread.
I can purchase lacquer here in town. I live just far enough outside the metro area for the rules do not apply in my county.
I did check on the lacquer price almost a year ago.
Enough white paint and reducer, to paint one car, was over $2500 dollars. I really can't imagine what the cost of red might be!
The counter guy said they get price increases almost monthly. I am confident the $2500 would now be considered a bargain.
I went with a base coat clear coat party because of price but mostly for the durability.
Paint is so expensive their is no way I would want to repeat this process again in 10 years.

I decided to have my marina blue 67 coupe repainted last year. I had an awful chemical stain on the hood that will not come out. The car was repainted in early 80 and is also checking around the windshield so I figured what the heck lets get it done. The car is a no hit body and the first estimate the owner said great no body damage should be an easy job. Estimate 30K yikes! I went to a second shop and was told 20 to 35 K. The car is not being painted.

The "Corvette Tax" at its finest, if you truly have an original no hit body those figures are ridiculous...
Keep looking and maybe check with some local NCRS members...

Depending on where you live and the shop's labor rate those numbers aren't that far off. There is between 200 and 250 hours of labor to completely de-trim, strip all paint, Sand, primer, re-sand, prime again, sand again, paint, buff, and then install all the trim. I may have missed a few steps like taping, un-taping, washing, minor body repairs, weatherstripping.. So multiply 250 hrs times $75, or $85 or $100 per hour, add in $5000 or $6000 in paint and materials and see where you end up.

I agree with your numbers that is why I decided that it is not worth putting 30k into a 60 K car.

If you truly have a "no hit" car and are OK with the factory gaps and fit, I think the prices you're getting are high...

I had my split window repainted by a guy with 48 years experience including red oxide sealant as part of the prep (which almost nobody does now) and it was in the lower end of that range, mainly because body work was involved...

Factory gaps fine with me. My gaps are nothing to be ashamed of. Will keep looking in the New York area have a few bucks to burn. Truly Truly Truly

Frank, How long ago did you have your car painted and what was your guy's labor rate? Did he strip all the trim and replace all the trim after?
