    c-2 shift console

    Hi All,
I have a '66 silver/silver convertible with a black dash. The shift console has the customary
few chips in the painted middle part so I would like to get it painted/dyed. I have been told that this is done with
a dye, is that correct? If so please let me know; then if it's dye or paint please let me know
if it's available through one of the restoration parts companies or if I can just take it to a
painter to take care of it.
    Thanks for your help

    Robert,

It is painted. Take it to a good painter and consult with him or her on the paint color. Semi-Black 1613 Industrial Krylon would be a good place to start for the color.

Don't take it anywhere, you can do it yourself. Get it out of the car, tape off the chrome and shift plate, prep the surface to remove any oil, grease and spray it. If there's a lot of metal showing, you may want to use a self etching primer before the finish coat.

Thanks JR, I have the painter so I'll ask him what he thinks.

Kind of a late response but here goes. Just redid mine from a '65. Taped off the chrome first. Use care as there is a narrow strip of chrome directly next to the black that should show. Used Rustoleum Semi-gloss and applied single coat. Was not happy as it was too glossy and somewhat blotchy. Wiped down lightly with lacquer thinner and resprayed with my old standby satin black (Rustoleum). Results: Perfect! Satin black has yet to let me down

Well stated Terry. The narrow strip is present on all original consoles due to the way they were painted at the factory. Nice detail to preserve if you refinish your console. Satin Black is a good choice for paint finish.

Absolutely - leave the "v" grove unpainted to preserve an original appearance. I agree that Semi-Black 1613 Industrial Krylon is a good choice.

SEM 39143 TRIM BLACK is also a very good acrylic paint for these. Easy to use, comes in a spray bomb, and has the correct satin gloss. I use this for instrument clusters, glove box doors, and black consoles.

Yes, SEM 39143 TRIM BLACK works well. Used it on my 64 FI car's interior.
